Kali – necklace

I was inspired to create the necklace by an obsidian blade that came to me from Mexico. Obsidian is black glass that is formed during a volcanic eruption, thanks to the heat of flowing lava. From this material, the ancient Aztecs and Mayans hand-made amazing blades for ceremonial knives, which were also used to make offerings. My blade was also hand carved by a Mexican artist. Obsidian, although it seems extremely black, is transparent – and the light passing through it gently shimmers rainbow-colours. Having it in my hand, I felt its amazingness and I decided that it would be the blade of the dagger/pendant with the image of the goddess of death. I chose the Indian goddess Kali – who is the goddess of death and the destruction that must come before something can be born again. Black Kali is also a goddess-mother who destroys the forces of evil to protect the good and innocent.
My version of the goddess has the form of an openwork moon (with a moonstone) above her head – her crown, under which a veil of rubies and emeralds flows. Her face (a gilded mask) is decorated with a diadem of chains and rubies. The pendant is suspended on a chain with rubies.
