Maybug – pin
A silver pin based on the maybug chitin shell, hand-covered with many layers of silver, which gave it strength of metal. In this process, the shell burns out (800 C), leaving the perfect, empty shape of a real insect. The beetle was given to me as part of an entomological collection and died a natural death. The chitinous shell of an insect is similar to a seashell – it does not decompose for a very long time, even when the creature has been dead for years. With my work, I want to show respect to this creature and bring attention to its beauty. Its antennae are decorated with garnets and on its back has a carefully arranged a mosaic of 24 carat gold petals. It is also adorned with a dark blue sapphire.
